House, formerly glovers' cottages, formerly stables. Late C18.
Stone and brick, mainly rendered; plain tile roof; brick end
stacks.
2-storeys, with added attic; 2-window range: 2-light casement
to left, with blind opening and 3-light casement, to right;
attic storey has completely weatherboarded front, hiding
surviving louvred ventilation system. Central doorway with C20
part glazed door and flat hood; flanked by 2-light casements.
Left gable has 3-light casement. 2-storey range to right, with
slate roof and 3-light casement. To rear: gabled staircase
projection; casements; dormer.
INTERIOR not inspected but reported as having spine beams and
dogleg stair at end of central passage; reset tympanum. Attic
workshop probably unique survival of Ludlow's gloving
industry.
History: in the late C18 the site belonged to the Ashton
family, master glovers and (probably shortly after 1785) a
stone stable was built, then converted to cottages for
glovers. The workshop was then added to the upper floor.
This is thought to be the last remaining example in Ludlow of
a structure used for a once prominent local industry and the
exterior (and possibly interior) survival of the ventilation
system is of much significance.
