Row of 13 cottages. Earlier C19, in 2 builds; variously
altered.
Brown brick in English garden wall bond (5+1), some painted
and some rendered, with sandstone dressings and slate roof.
Double-depth, all single-fronted, with a through-lobby between
Nos 32 & 34 and a waggon entry between Nos 42 & 44; and
various back extensions.
Two low storeys, 15 windows in all (one each except Nos 34 &
44 which have a second window over their respective entries).
Nos 26-32 have coupled round-headed doorways, all except No.32
having fanlights with radiating glazing bars, and the others
have square-headed doorways, mostly coupled, with wedge
lintels; the lobby entry has a round-headed arch; the waggon
entry has a basket arch with keystone, recesses in the side
walls for former double doors, and a cobbled floor, and above
it is a small gable containing a round-headed sashed window
with radiating glazing bars.
The facades of Nos 28 & 38 are painted, those of Nos 5, 32-36
and Nos 40-46 rendered or pebble-dashed. All the windows have
raised sills and wedge lintels (except where covered by
render); unhorned 16-pane sashed windows survive at No.26
(ground floor only), No.30 & No.44; Nos 38 and 42 have 4-pane
sashes; but all the others have altered glazing.
The roof steps up between Nos 34 & 36, and again between Nos
42 & 44; Nos 36-50 have moulded gutter cornices; and all the
cottages have large lateral ridge chimney stacks.
Forms the largest component of a continuous group of similar
cottages on this side of Chapel Street.
