Corner public house. Possibly earlier C18 fabric, refronted c.1800 with c.1900 pub
front. Stock brick, slate roof, 3 storeys and dormered mansard. 4 windows wide with
3 window returns to Carlisle Street. c.1900 pilastered pub front to ground floor
with angled entrance on corner. Upper floors have recessed sash windows, no glazing
bars, under red brick gauged flat arches. Crowning stucco cornice with open cast
iron balustrade in front of mansard. Formerly called the "Highlander". A public
house was on the site in 1748. Prominent corner with strong group value.
