SD40NW WIGAN ROAD, Westhead
663-1/4/198 (North side)
Mawdesleys Farmhouse with attached
barn

II

Farmhouse and barn in laithe-house form. Probably mid to later
C18; enlarged and altered. Brown brick in English garden wall
bond (3+1), with roofs of slate and stone slate respectively.
Single-depth 2-unit plan with added range to rear of house,
and 2-bay barn continued to the right. The house is of 2 low
storeys, 2 windows, with a lean-to porch in the centre, and 2
segmental-headed 3-light windows on each floor, all
small-paned casements; and a ridge chimney and gable chimney,
both with water-tabling for a former thatched roof. The added
rear range has sliding sash windows. The barn has been altered
by early removal of the former waggon doorway on this side,
but the stone bases of the jambs remain.
