Commemorative cross. 1903. By Austin and Paley. To celebrate
the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902. Sandstone ashlar. A
tapering square shaft on an octagonal plinth on an octagonal
stepped base. The plinth has sunk panels on each face with, on
the south, a shield bearing the Royal coat-of-arms, on the
north those of the Borough of Lancaster, on the west the
Lancashire rose, and on the east an explanatory inscription.
The cross shaft has a panelled base which rises in the centre;
the shaft itself has half-round mouldings worked on the edges
and panels of arabesque on the east and west faces. The
cross-head, which has panels of leaves carved on the east and
west faces, has rounded ends to the arms and concave quadrants
between them.
