Manor house, now large house. Early C16, altered and extended C18 and C19,
altered C20. Part timber frame partly encased in painted plaster and brick;
old tile gabled and hipped roof. 2 framed bays crosswing originally jettied on 3
sides; to 3 or 4 framed adjoining bays, extended on north and south; 2 gables facing
west, 4 facing east. Part 2 storeys, part 2 storeys and attics. 3 chimneys on
ridge. Sash windows with glazing bars in moulded architrave frames. West front: dentil
eaves. On angular bay the whole height with 4 sashes on the right hand, under
projecting gable on curved brackets with large bargeboards. One bay gable to the left
of this flush with wall face and with false timbers; 6-panelled door in projecting
porch with flat hood and Ionic columnettes on a short balustrade either side of door
with turned balusters and moulded tail. Further ionic pilasters at rear. To left of
this 4 bays with C20 angular bay on ground floor with casements and glazing bars,
moulded cornice and flat roof.
Interior: 2 framed bays of heavy floor joists and large dragon beams exposed in
Drawing room. Joists have small chamfers with run out stops up to position of
former jetty beams. Similar chamfers and stops to dragon beams but principal beams
are plain. Some timber framing visible on first floor. Drawing room also contains
3 large panels and 3 smaller panels of late C18 tapestry work in moulded panel
frames, depicting woodland and riding scenes.VCH Vol lll p.191.
