Barn with animal driven corn mill and attached stable. Barn C17 or earlier; mill and
stable probably early C19. Timber framed with weatherboard cladding on rebuilt brick
plinth; Welsh slate roof. Stable of red brick in flemish bond with some glazed
headers, plain tile roof. Aisled barn of 6½ bays, the I bay at west end added at
same time as west bay bricked off from rest of barn and floor, animal wheel and mill
inserted in it; brick 1 bay addition at east end; stable attached to south-east
corner, forming L plan. Strap-hinged board doors throughout. South (yard) elevation:
to right of centre, recessed cart-entry rises below hipped porch; 2 blocked doorways
to right; stable door with small window above to far right; at left end, wall is set
back and has double door, hatch on right, and hipped dormer with small-pane
casement. Roof hipped at right end, half-hipped at left end. Stable projecting on
right has half-nipped"roof; to left side a board door with 2-pane window over; and
to right side a 6-pane window with leaded over-light and small window. Rear of barn
opposing cart entry under hipped roof; board door and hatch at right end; to brick
left-hand bay and segmental-arched doorway and 2-light window and stack on left.
Interior: barn frame has jowelled arcade posts arch-braced to tie-beams and arcade
plates; collared queen-post roof trusses with clasped purlins; curved wind braces;
some old rafters; square-section ridge-piece on apex yokes. Wall framing has
wide-spaced studs; mid-rail and long straight braces to former end wall. Evidence of
former wattle and daub panels or re-use of timbers in bay to left of cart-entry.
Arcade posts flanking cart-entries have curved down-braces to brick plinths. Remains
of former timber threshing floor. Mill section has animal wheel with yokes for 2
beasts (probably donkeys) geared to shafts which drive machinery on upper floor and
which comprises 2 sets of millstones and hoist. The gearing and machinery is
virtually complete; the wheels are all wooden-toothed. The upper floor has wide
floorboards, bins and remains of hopper. This is a rare and remarkably complete
example of an animal-driven corn mill in situ.
