LCC housing estate block of flats. 1897-1902 one of the first estates
by the LCC Architects' Department housing section under Owen Fleming and
more particularly in this case R. Minton Taylor who was probably
responsible for the estate layout radiating from a rectangular public
garden. Red brick with some slight stone dressings, slate roofs. Humane
Arts and Crafts socialist housing design inspired by Philip Webb, Lethaby
and Smith and Brewer with "Queen Anne" features, all executed to high
standards. One of 2 blocks of 5-storey pavilions with 4 storeys and steep
mansarded attic in between, forming an L plan with common courtyard behind.
12-window ranges with 2 pavilion hipped roof breaks. Entrances in
courtyard elevations. Segmental arched glazing bar sashes with exposed box
frames, grouped to express interior distribution. Part of a symmetrical
composition with Hogarth House and Reynolds House q.v. (c.f. Boundary
Street Estate, Tower Hamlets).
