Parish church. Quite large, probably C12 origin. Many periods
but mainly C15. Battlements, flint and stone dressings, slate
roof. Some chequer-work on W wall of N aisle. Buttressed, 3
stage, W tower has narrow spire. Buttressed aisle to either side
of nave, that on S with central projecting porch. Perpendicular
aisle and clerestory windows, but those of N aisle late Decorated
(c.1340). Big, 5-light, E window with panel tracery in two
tiers. Interior has 5 bay nave. Octagonal piers and C15 tie
beam roof with wall posts resting on figured, stone stops. 3-
light, clerestory windows. Doorway in N side of chancel arch to
former loft of rood screen. Ground floor door to left of pier
with trefoiled piscina to N. Chancel, originally c.1220, has a
blocked N lancet window and a double piscina on S with trefoil
arches. Ogee tomb recess on S.
Fitments include C15 choir screen with panel tracery and similar
style chancel stalls with poppyheads. C13 door to N vestry. Two
wooden chairs of c.1400. C15 octagonal, panel-traceried pulpit.
Perpendicular stone font in N aisle. C16 and C17 brasses, and an
early C17 wall monument to Judith, wife of John Aylmer, Bishop of
London. W doorway has stone head stops of king and queen by
Henry Moore, 1953. (RCHM (1911), Pevsner (1977) 253-4).
