Parish Church. Stone with bold mouldings, well carved gargoyles, battlemented
parapets and lead roofs. West tower and nave circa ll00, south aisle about
1210, chancel rebuilt 1290, north aisle early C14, screen late C14-early C15,
the roofs C15 and clerestory late C15. Chancel has 2 late Early English windows
each side, east window similar 3 light. Double piscina Early English.
Roof C15 Chancel Screen, timber, 8 bays with much original painting, fan
vaulted head, tracery and painted figures of kings and bishops in lower
panelling, two in each bay. Nave: South arcade 5 bays, octagonal piers,
carved caps. North arcade 4 bays with piers of clustered shafts, moulded
caps and bases. 5 3 light windows to clerestory. Nave Roof:Panelled with
moulded beams and elaborate bosses and angels on junctions. Trusses supported
on tall brackets formed of carved figures. 12 Apostles standing on peacocks,
6 each side. C15. Similar roof in chancel. Font: Early English, octagonal.
Cover castellated wood made by T.L. 1640. friend of nave early C16 pews.
Box pews mostly C18, a few C17. C18 Pulpit and Royal Arms. Brass, and
wall monument on north wall of chancel to Elizabeth Giffard 1687, Other C17
and C18 monuments. Tower: 4 stages, Decorated bell chamber with large decorated
windows. Battlemented parapet. Norman below. RCHM II 219 MON 1. -43-
