Parish Church. C12 nave core, with C14 rebuilding and C15 fenestration.
Nave, Chancel and South Porch. Rubble stone walls with a chamfered
stone plinth, rendered on south wall. Slate roof with stone slab
eaves. Stone gable-copings with apex-blocks and small crosses over.
Stone bell-cote at west gable. Nave windows: west (C15) 2-light with
cinquefoil-cusped head and a quatrefoil over. Hollow-chamfered
stone jambs. South: 2-light trefoil-cusped with reticulated head.
Label with head stops, c.Cl9. North wall of nave has 2 round-headed
blockings, one of which is probably a C12 doorway, the other has an
inserted 2-light perpendicular window. Chancel has C15 2-light
trefoil-cusped window with panel-tracery, label and head-stops,
(south). East window is a larger version of that on south wall.
South Porch, c.C18 with large stone quoins and a segmental stone
lintel over the entrance. Inside scalloped capitals without
shafting, and a round arch over, therefore C12 entrance. Straight-
chamfered jambs to doorway. Plank door with strap hinges, C20.
Interior: 2 cells, with plastered barrel vaults. Pointed chancel
arch, responds without capitals, 2 nave-moulding with a sunk quadrant
between c.C14. Fittings: font: round bowl with chamfered edge, and
cable-moulding at top. Gadrooning from base of bowl upwards,
enclosing flowers, mid C12. Chancel: Piscina with trefoil-head and
keeled rool arris, C14. Memorial Tablet with large stone cartouche
and Latin inscription, to John Bishop, Armiger, died 19 January 1682,
aged 33. Coat of Arms and skull below. North wall: stone tablet,
most unusual,with rusticated pilasters with cross-crosslet-fitché and
scallop-shell ornament. Tablet over with sword and pennant and words:
'Virtws post-funera vivit'. Below the shelf at bottom:memento mori.
Inscription on main brass plate - Henry Michael of Stamerham in
Co Sussex, died Nov 12th 1662, aged 21. Made by: Jo Bishop Capitan
fecit, Rich. Meadway sculpsit. Revodos, now in nave, in panelled wood
with Crucifixion in middle panel, Annunciation above, Flagellation
and Resurrection at sides, in poker-work and incised technique, foreign.
c.Cl7. Three C19 wall tablets, one to John String, 1819 and
Elizabeth his wife, 1802, white marble with cornice, urn and shield-
of-arms, by King, London.
