Former watch making factory, now used for light industrial purposes. 1893 for the
Lancashire Watch Company. Cast-iron frame with concrete floors and brick infill;
roof material not visible. Long narrow range-runs parallel to Albany Street and is
served by 2 external stair turrets to the rear. 3 storeys; 43 window bays, the
glazing taking up the greater part of the elevation; all windows except to ground
with small panes. Two inserted doors, one with concertina shutters. Iron
stanchions externally expressed. Pedimented gable wall to N end, the parapet with
moulded cornice; blocked round-headed windows, and oculus to gable wall. South
gable wall altered 1990 after gate damage. Gabled stair and privy blocks to rear
connected to main range by short corridor block. Fenestration to rear similar to
front elevation. Interior structure intact but with later sub-divisions.
Watch-making factories on this scale were rare and this is understood to be the sole
surviving example in Britain. It also marks the high-water mark of a local
industry that achieved national significance in the C19.
