1/69 Argent Manor House
GV II
House. C15/C16 with later alterations and additions. Timber framed and rough
rendered. Red plain tiled roof. Central chimney stack with 4 attached octagonal
shafts. 2 storeys and attics. Single storey C19/C20 right red brick extension
with end chimneystack, probably a former kitchen/bakehouse. 2:2 window range of
C20 small paned casements, C20 gabled porch and door. Rear range. Internally much
of the frame is covered but there are heavy chamfered and boxed-in bridging joists
on jowled storey posts to ground floor. The chimneystack is blocked but coved out-
ward to ceiling joists on ground floor. Jowled storey posts to first floor. One
arched brace remains to tie-beam. Halved and bridled top plate scarf. Rear wing
appears to be C19/C20 of reused timber. There is a cast iron fireplace with moulded
surround in a bedroom. A Roger Argent is mentioned in the Subsity Rolls of 1295
and the present owner holds a copy of'n indenture relating to the property dated
36th year of King Charles II.
