5/39 Malthouse Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse. C17, in 2 phases; C19 additions. Timber framed and plastered with
a pantiled roof. Set forward to the right is a C19 wing of white brick with a
glazed black pantiled roof. Main block to right (2 storeys and attic) appears
to be part of an early C17 3-cell house, the parlour end replaced in later C17
by the present 1 1/2-storey addition. C20 casement windows with horizontal
glazing bars. 2 mid C20 doors. An axial stack is set against the left gable
end of the main block. Inside, most of the frame is papered over. The right
gable end has the remains of a large attic window with square mullions.
Ovolo-moulded axial bridging beam in hall, and in the chamber above a
similarly-moulded bridging beam and complete cornice. Plain square joists at
the service end. In the front part if the service cell is a late C17 newel
stair extending in 2 flights to the attic. The roof trusses are supported by
cruck-like members springing from low tie beams, with short horizontal links
on each side to the top of the wallplate (cf. Church House, Stradbroke).
There are 2 rows of purlins. The structure at the later end is entirely
concealed
