Loggia, balustrading and steps. Circa 1850; a part of the landscaping works
by Sir Charles Barry for Sir W.F. Middleton, Bart. White limestone. The
loggia is in the form of a Roman temple:- 3 arches at front and rear are
supported on Tuscan columns; a single arch at each end, and set-forward
Corinthian columns at the end of each elevation. Flat roof with moulded
cornice; obelisk finials at corners. A short length of balustrading with
turned balusters links the temple to flights of steps on north and south
sides. Further balustrading is placed symmetrically on either side: running
eastwards for 9 metres, and then in diverging arcs of about 22m length, then
north and south for a further 35m each. The curved sections are terminated by
enriched urns, and each has a female statue at the centre. At the extreme
north and south ends of the feature, a large pair of enriched vases on drum
plinths stand beside a short flight of steps at the north, and a balcony seat
with limestone retaining wall at the south end. The whole feature forms a
foil to the Grand Stairs and is a major component of the landscaping works.
