WETHERDEN STOWMARKET ROAD
TM 06 SW
4/234 Nos 1 and 2 Brickwall
- Farmhouse
-- II
Former farmhouse, now two houses. Built in 2 stages. To left is a building
of c.1530-1550 in 3 bays and 2 storeys. To right is a parlour cross-wing of
c.1600 and 2 storeys with attics. Timber-framed with plaster infill panels
between exposed framing. Both phases are jettied towards the road and the
wing is also jettied at attic floor level. The earlier section has close-
studding with one tension brace exposed. The joist-ends have braces at bay
intervals with moulded shafts, and the girth beneath is moulded. The cross-
wing has wider-spaced studwork with tension and arch studbracing which was
originally concealed by plaster. The fascia bressumer at 1st floor level has
a well-carved trailing leaf pattern. The oversailing tiebeam is also well
carved; at the centre and both ends are pendant finials with shallow depressed
4-centred arched brackets also carved. Plaintiled roofs: an axial chimney has
a shaft rebuilt in C19 gault brick. To left is a C19 gable chimney of red
brick. Early or mid C20 casements; the 4 main windows in the parlour wing are
flanked by original blocked side-lights of c.1600 with ovolo-mullions. Mid
C19 gabled plaintiled porch at lobby-entrance position: cusped and pierced
bargeboards, and pointed boarded and battened door. Interior not examined.
