5/21 The Homestead

Former farmhouse. C16; considerably altered 1936 when a parallel range was
added at the rear. Timber framed core, now encased in C19 and C20 red brick;
plaintiled roof. 2 storeys and attic. 3 cell form. 4 windows, C20 2-light
mullioned casements with diamond-leaded panes under flat soldier-course
arches. The internal stack has 2 C20 detached octagonal flues with star caps
comprising 3 courses of pointed bricks, with further ornamental brick courses
below; there is an inset panel in the base of the stack. Gable end stack to
right with a single flue in matching style, set slightly forward of the ridge.
C20 entrance doors at the gable ends. The hall has closely-spaced unchamfered
joists and in the rear wall at first floor level are 2 original windows with
evidence for a third. Some of the timber frame is also exposed. Clasped
purlin roof with arched wind-bracing.
