ILKETSHALL ST. MARGARET
St. Margaret's Hall
II
Farmhouse, formerly divided into two. Early and mid C17. Two storeys and attics; a main range and a slightly later cross-wing. Timber-framed, partly rendered, but mainly faced in colour-washed brick. Black glazed pantiles. Both ranges have internal chimney-stacks with plain red brick shafts.
The main range has three C20 cross windows to the upper floor and two three-light mullion-and-transome type to the ground floor, all in shallow reveals. Two doors, slightly recessed, with four flush panels, the top two glazed, and rectangular fanlights: one has a small open porch. The cross-wing has two-light and three-light C20 casement windows. At the rear is a tall narrow stair wing, the full height of the house.
Inside, most timbers are covered: in the main range, one main beam with ovolo-moulding and complex stepped stops with jewel. The upper ceilings are original, and a small section of C17 turned balusters survives by the attic stair at the top of the stair wing. The roof has clasped purlins and a lower row of unstepped butt purlins, straight collars, and intermediate collars between the trusses. The cross-wing has a three-cell lobby-entrance form: five bays, including a chimney-bay, with a newel stair beside the stack. Some plain framing exposed. Roof with one row of unstepped and one row of stepped butt purlins. Both ranges have later saddles attached to the apex of the rafters.
