Description

SOUTH ELMHAM, ST. PETER
TM 38 NW

2/85 Barn to the rear of
- St. Peter's Hall

GV II

Barn, C17. Timber-framed and weatherboarded; thatch. Frame in 4 bays, but
formerly in 5: the north gable has been replaced by a wall of old brick, very
varied in colour. The bay at the south end has a later brick partition wall
and upper floor. The whole frame has evidence of reconstruction, and was
probably moved from another site: short lengths of,middle rail have been
introduced between the studs, and long straight braces halved across them;
reversed arched braces in the walls also. The arched braces to the tie beams
replaced by bolted knees. The high doors were replaced c.1980 by a large
reused C17 mullioned window, and there is another mullioned window in the
south gable. Roof in 8 bays, 2 to each wall bay, with 2 rows oil unstepped
butt purlins and straight windbraces. Included for Group Value
