House. C16 and early C17. 2 storeys and attics; L-shaped form: main range
and cross-wing. Timber-framed and rendered with the ground floor of the wing
in whitewashed brick; plaintiles. The main range has an internal chimney-
stack with a plain red brick shaft, and a later red brick gable end with
chimney-stack. A brick lean-to extension behind the wing. Various casement
windows: on the rear wall, 2 with old diamond-leaded panes and 2 with square-
leaded panes. One ovolo-moulded mullioned window by the stack in the main
range, and in the upper part of the cross-wing gable a window with ovolo-
moulded mullions and small side-lights. There is evidence for other similar
windows on the ground floor. A slight difference in date between the 2
ranges, the cross-wing, which has been shortened, being the earlier: on the
ground floor, ovolo-moulded main beams and joists, curved stops with jewel,
and a moulded lintel to the open fireplace. In the main range, the joists are
set on edge. Both ranges have similar, but not identical, side purlin roofs:
the principal rafters not diminished but cut away for the insertion of clasped
purlins (cf. Carmel, Rumburgh Street). A lower row of unstepped butt purlins,
windbraces, and intermediate collars between the trusses.
