Description

CHURCH ROAD
1.
5377 Newton
Church of All Saints
TL 94 SW 9/732 23.3.61.
II* GV

2.
A flint church with stone dressings of Norman origin but mainly of C14
work. Altered in the C20. The nave is no longer used as a church and
is being renovated for alternative use. The church now occupies the former
chancel. The west tower has diagonal buttresses and a brick castellated
parapet. The south porch is C15 (restored in 1975), with a cambered beam
and crown post. The former chancel has a C15 altar tomb on the north
side, with an ogee arched recess, with the figure of a lady. On the south
side there is C14-C15 blind arcading. There is a C15 octagonal font.
The north door of the former nave is blocked to form a window but retains
the Norman doorway with zig-zag ornamentation in the arch, 2 shafts and
scalloped capitals. On the south side there is a C15 altar tomb with
a recess and a figure of a lady. Graded for its historical value.
