Memorial. Late C18, for George Simon Harcourt. Limestone. Gadrooned vase-shaped
urn with leaf-carving to neck; stands on tall pedestal with moulded plinth and
entablature. Commemorates the poet William Whitehead, died 1785, with verse by
"Mr. Mason", the poet-gardener whose memorial (q.v.) lies to the NE. The urn
formerly stood under the "Whitehead Oak" at Nuneham Courtenay, whence it was
moved after the Harcourts returned to Harcourt House (q.v.) in 1948.
