Country house, now ICI conference centre and club. 1810. Red
brick in Flemish bond, slate roofs. L-plan formed by
rectangular main block with service wing attached at north
end. Classical style. The main block is 2 storeys over a
basement, plus added attic, 5 bays, symmetrical, with a 3-bay
pedimented centre breaking forwards slightly; plinth, renewed
projected eaves, restored pediment and hipped roof. The centre
has a giant round-headed blank arch containing a segmentally
curved porch with Tuscan columns distyle in antis, plain
frieze, modillioned cornice and blocking course, protecting a
pilastered doorway with panelled double doors, side-lights and
plain rectangular overlight. All the windows have raised sills
and flat-arched heads, and are now top-hung casements with 12
panes at ground floor and 9 panes above. To the left a high
screen wall encloses the yard to the service wing which has a
gable adjoining the house and a set-back main range. The
right-hand (south) return wall has a 2-storey 3-window bow
with French windows at ground floor and 1st-floor windows like
those at the front (now flanked by C20 flat-roofed additions).
Rear: main block has exposed basement and windows like those
at front; service wing has arcade of blank arches at ground
floor. Interior: groin-vaulted hall; fine open-well flying
staircase of stone with very slender cast-iron balusters and
domed skylight; otherwise, mostly altered.
