Cotton spinning mill. Part of Murray's Mills (with Old Mill,
Decker Mill, New Mill, Doubling Mill and Fireproof Mill, qv);
now disused. Built to use mains electricity as its principal
power source in 1908, rebuilding an earlier mill on the site
of c1820. Brick, with internal construction of cast iron,
steel and concrete. 5 storeys, 10x4 bays, with entrance, stair
and privy tower advanced at NW angle, and tower housing
electric motors projecting towards the NE. Wide segmentally
arched windows (3 per bay in longitudinal axis) with
simplified detailing, including cornice over 4th storey, and
panelled angle pilasters to tower with swept segmental parapet
running between them.
Included as a significant part of Murray's Mills, important as
an example of large-scale operation. Little Mill is also the
earliest mill in Greater Manchester to be built to use mains
electricty.
