Bank now health club. Dated 1864. For the Lancaster Banking
Company. Ashlar limestone with brick to rear, graduated slate
roof. 2 storeys, 4:1:3 bays wrapped around corner of The
Strand and St George's Square. Moulded plinth; rusticated
ground floor; recessed corner bay set on curve. Plain sashes
now partially replaced by casements. A pair of doorways to St
George's Square are set in raised panel: each has pilasters
with composite capitals and archivolt with mask keystone.
Right-hand doorway has 8-panel door and plain fanlight;
left-hand doorway is now a window. Sash on right has sunken
apron, recessed surround and segmental arch with keystone;
continuous cornice. 1st-floor sill band to similar, but
square-headed, window surrounds. String course below
modillions to simple cornice with blocking course. Corner bay
lit by segmentally-arched window to each floor; oval date
plaque on blocking course has scrolled supports and anthemion.
Hipped roof; ridge stack and end stacks with modillioned
cornices. Left return windows as front. INTERIOR: original
staircase with cast-iron balustrade panels and wreathed
mahogany handrail; margin-glazed ceiling light. Banking hall
ceiling now underdrawn.
