BIRKENHEAD

SJ3088 SLATEY ROAD, Claughton
789-1/10/206 (East side)
Williamson Art Gallery and Museum

GV II

Art gallery and museum. 1928. By Leonard Hannaford and Herbert
Thearle. Brick with stone dressings, part-glazed low pitched
roof. Single-storeyed, built around 2 internal courtyards.
Neo-Georgian style. Entrance front to Slatey Road with
advanced entrance towards centre: paired Corinthian columns
flank double doors in stone architrave, "Williamson Art
Gallery and Museum" inscribed in the cornice above. Flanking
bays marked by large brick-work panels with rusticated brick
frieze below stone cornice, and brick quoins at angles. Paired
Corinthian pilasters each side of recessed round arched window
towards the right. Centre of elevation to Ball's Road slightly
advanced and marked by 6 Corinthian pilasters under cornice
with paterae. Between the pilasters, expressed round arched
blind niches, 2 with abstract reliefs. Stone plinth and
cornice throughout. The building is almost entirely
windowless, relying on top-lighting into the galleries which
are arranged on the corridor principal.
