Mortuary chapel. c1840. By Charles Underwood. Pennant stone
basement, limestone ashlar and dressings, slate roof.
Cruciform plan. Neoclassical style. Single storey and vault;
3-bay range. Projecting centre is approached by 5 steps
between pedestals, with clasping Corinthian pilasters; plain
entablature and pediment with balustrade either side and open
pedimented cupola with fluted columns above. Large 8-panel
door has moulded panels to sides and above; blind window in
side bays with architrave and dentilled cornice, and banded
rustication beneath. Side elevations have a tripartite window,
and a bay with a Venetian window projects from the rear;
arched doorway to vault in left-hand elevation. INTERIOR:
tiled floor and dais in the bay, panelled plinth and pilasters
to cornice, and moulded panels in the ceiling. Includes a
number of well-carved memorial tablets. The cupola is based on
the Roman monument at St Remy, Provence.
