- II
Four cottages, now one house. Datestone GW 1830. Regular coursed ironstone
rubble. C20 tile roof. 2 stone ridge stacks. Two storeys plus attic; 4-window
range. 4 entrances, one at either end and 2 central. All have chamfered
jambs and hood moulds with label stops. Plank doors throughout. Two 3-light
stone mullioned windows with hood moulds and label stops to left and right of
central doors. Four 2-light similar windows to first floor. Central gabled bay
has 2-light stone mullioned window with cusped heads and hood mould and label
stops. Owner states that gables formerly had ball finials. Stone copings with
kneelers. Latin inscription above central doorways: 'Unless the Lord is with
us we build in vain'. History: The building called The Court may originally
have been the church house which was later used for court leets. The rear part
dates from the C17 but the main structure was rebuilt in the C19 as 4
tenements. The mason employed was Robert Cleaver. The cottages were converted
into one house in 1963. C20 interior.
