Gathouse. C14, altered 1648, partly demolished C19. Built as
the gatehouse to this former Grange to Fountains Abbey. The
present building is the ground floor, southern half of a
formerly 2 storey gateway with a large central arch. Limestone
rubble with gritstone dressings and stone slate, single pitch
roof. Single storey. Quoins. Chamfered stone plinth.
East elevation has a recessed 3-light chamfered mullion
window, each light with a round head, now blocked. Above a
moulded string course with a carved stop at the southern
corner, and the springing of the entrance arch at the northern
corner. The north elevation has to the left a single doorway
with a chamfered ashlar surround and a triangular head. West
elevation is blank. South elevation has a chamfered stone
plinth.
