Barn, now garage and ancillary domestic building. C16,
extended in C18, converted to domestic uses in C20.
Timber-framed, weatherboarded, roofed with straw thatch and
corrugated light alloy. 4 bays aligned approximately E-W, with
C18 midstrey to N of second bay from W end. Extended to E by 4
bays in C18, with C20 internal stack against N wall, and
lean-to extensions to N and E. Single-storey wing to S of E
bay and lean-to.
EXTERIOR: the S elevation now forms the front. In second bay
from left end, double garage doors in C17 gabled entrance,
replacing the great doors. Three C20 casements with diamond
leading, and 3 more in tiled gabled dormers. Two C20 halved
doors. Roof hipped at left end. The front pitch of the main
roof, the left hip, and the extensions at the right end are
thatched. Most of the rear pitch, the rear midstrey and
lean-to are roofed with corrugated light alloy, the thatch
extending about one metre below the ridge.
INTERIOR: the C16 barn has jowled posts, heavy studding and
curved bracing. Cambered tie-beams, crownpost roof, complete
in left bay, with one axial brace to plain crownpost between
this and threshing bay, the other axial brace removed.
Remainder of roof rebuilt. The wallplates at front and rear of
the threshing bay have been interrupted for the insertion of
higher great doors to the front, and for the midstrey to the
rear. The left extension has unjowled posts, lighter studding
with primary straight bracing, face-halved and bladed scarfs
in the wallplates, straight tie-beams and a clasped purlin
roof.
