House. 1723 to 1728 for James Brydges, the Duke of Chandos. By
Benjamin Holloway or Fort and Shepherd, the Duke's London
surveyors. Painted Flemish-bond brick, stone coping to right
gable end, painted stone rusticated quoins, architraves, cills
and doorcase, double Roman tile roof, brick stack to left
gable end and rear right. 4-unit plan. 3 storeys; 3-window
range. Segmental-arched architraves and moulded cills to
6/6-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars to the 2 ranges
to the left, a C19 flat-roofed 3-storey canted bay spans the
right half of the facade, it has 6/6-pane sash windows in
forward frames below a cornice to each floor. The doorcase, to
left of centre, has a moulded architrave with a heavy stepped
keystone reaching to a floating cornice; the door has 6 raised
and fielded panels and an iron knocker. The right return
facing West Quay, has an 8/8-pane sash window to the ground
floor below a 6/6-pane sash in a canted bay to the first
floor. INTERIOR: retains some late C18 cornices. The terraces
of houses in Castle Street form an important group, unusual
for their scale and ambition outside London's West End.
