Drinking fountain. 1872. By G and H Godwin. Limestone ashlar
and marble and sandstone details, Pennant plinth. Gothic
Revival style. A 3-sided spirelet on Pennant steps, with
2-stage buttresses to the corners containing round red
sandstone panels. Open 2-centre arches between have alternate
sandstone and limestone voussoirs, foliate intrados, pink
marble shafts, set in weathered gables with finials and carved
shield panels. 3-sided weathered spire has chamfered corners
and a finial. Vaulted over the 3-sided fountain and taps, with
a white marble surround. Commemorates the 1861 presentation of
the Downs to the City of Bristol by the Merchant Venturers.
