Terrace of 9 houses. 1782-85. Probably by William Paty.
Limestone ashlar with party wall stacks and pantile and slate
mansard roofs. Late Georgian style. 3 storeys, attic and
basement; 5-window range.
Terrace divided by pilasters to a cornice and parapet, plat
and first-floor sill bands. Each house has a ground floor with
a rusticated 3-window range, and plain 2-window range
containing the doorways, to alternate sides: doorways have
Doric columns, triglyphs to pediments, fanlights and 6-panel
doors. 6/6-pane sashes, 3/3-panes to second floor, and varied
dormers.
No.1 has a late C19 doorway in the right return with large
volute consoles to a modillion canopy, overlight and 2-panel
door, with an extension behind. Wrought-iron basket balconies
to first-floor of No.3. No.4 has a late C19 single-storey
porch with a semicircular-arched doorway, a right-hand stone
oriel with plain transoms and mullions, and a raised mansard.
No.8 has a narrow mid C19 doorway with console cornice and a
left-hand tripartite ground-floor window.
INTERIOR: rear central stone open dogleg stairs with stick and
cast-iron balusters and a wreathed rail; winder attic stairs;
panelled reveals to doors with 6 raised panels, panelled
shutters, fireplaces, cornices and dados.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached wrought-iron railings with urn
finials to basement areas, and to raised flagged front areas
of Nos 6, 7 & 8. Nos 1-5 are set back behind a curved drive.
One of the first Clifton Terraces after Boyce's Buildings
(qv).
