Description

PORTLAND

SY67NE SOUTHWELL STREET, Southwell
969-1/1/169 (South side)
Methodist Chapel

II

Methodist chapel. Dated 1849. Hammer-dressed stone block,
slate roof. Small chapel, gable to street, has two C19 16-pane
sashes to stone cills flanking central gabled porch with slab
roof; pair of plank doors to segmental head. Coped gables with
cross-roll saddle stones. Very modest, but street front
unchanged, except later inscription "Southwell Methodist
Church 1849" on gable above doors. A modest but complete
manisfestation of the importance which Methodism played in the
Island's social history.
