GV II
Large town house, later 3 houses with shops. Late C17 on older
site, probably for William Challons, or possibly John Reede;
refronted mid C19. Stucco on rubble, steep dry Delabole slate
roof, bitumen-grouted on the right, panelled front eaves
soffit; brick end stack on right.
Single-depth extended to double-depth plan including C19
outshut at rear replacing earlier wings and wing on right. 3
storeys; 7-window range. Late C19 horned sashes within moulded
architraves; central moulded open pediment to 2nd floor.
Ground floor has 3 complete late C19 shop fronts: double shop
front to No.28 (left); others are single; all with splayed
doorways, pilasters, consoles and moulded cornices over
fascia; blocked house doorway on right.
INTERIOR: during building work c1980 some C17 features were
revealed including oak timber-frame partition with 2
ovolo-moulded doorframes to rear of front range, and an
unusual oak trussed roof structure (similar to 5 The Square
(qv)) with curved truss feet, no collars or tie beams but
truss feet jointed onto wallplate which in turn is carried on
C17 attic floor joists of pine (similar joists to floor
below), trenched pine purlins and evidence for dormer window
to each bay along the front. Also revealed was the clear
method of supporting the front rubble wall on needles while
the shop fronts were inserted. Before this inspection old
panelling was removed from one room.
