Lodge and attached boundary wall. Mid C19. Of narrow, snecked
sandstone with chamfered quoins and ashlar dressings, wide
copings to gables and a single ridge stack, with decorative
corbelled capping. Welsh slated roof.
L-plan house, with a deep, open-bed pediment to each gable.
Front elevation (W); 2 storeys with advanced pedimented gable
to left. To the right, an open integral porch with a
semicircular-arched opening with moulded arched head. Set-back
doorway with semicircular fanlight and 4-panel door. Ashlar
storey band above, with blind plaque within moulded surround.
Gable to left with ground-floor canted bay window, and central
first-floor single-light window with semicircular head, and
band which links with pediment base. Projecting sill with
cast-iron window box holder. Sash windows without glazing bars
except for main window to bay, which is a 2 over 2 pane sash.
Gable to S elevation similarly detailed, but with flat-headed
opening to ground floor.
Rear elevation with door and window opening to ground floor,
and shallow lean-to within SE angle.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: contemporary stone wall with moulded
ashlar coping attached via C20 replacement gates to S of
entrance. The wall is stepped to accommodate changes in ground
level, and helps to enclose the garden. INTERIOR not
inspected.
The building is believed to have been built as a replacement
for an earlier lodge to Hurdsfield House (qv) built by the
Brocklehurst family, silk manufacturers and notable
Macclesfield benefactors in the mid C19.
