Public house with attached stable and bakehouse. c1600, c1800,
C20. Timber-framing and brick, hipped peg and flat clay tiled
roofs. Plan of original block parallel to road with higher
later wing at W end running N towards road, stable and
bakehouse at E end and SE corner respectively.
EXTERIOR: one and a half storeys. N front elevation has E and
W units. E unit comprises one and a half storey range with
single storey stable flush at E end. Wall now of C19 red
brick. Stable colourwashed, central doorway with C20 boarded
door, small segment headed fixed window, second doorway, now
blocked with upper C20 casement window.
One and a half storey range has C20 projecting clay tiled
pentice roof on 2 slender brick piers. Ground floor
part-opening casement window and C20 door panelled in Tudor
style. Recessed C19 wall at E end has segment headed doorway
with contemporary door having 2 lower flush panels and upper
glazing. Upper floor lit by 2 dormer windows, now with C20
casements, one 2-light and one 3-light. To W, projecting
timber-framed and rendered block c1800 with hipped roof and
C20 brick plinth. Both ground and first floors have C20 metal
framed 3-light casement windows with glazing bars, 6x3 panes
in all. Rear, S elevation, principal unit c1600 range with C20
wing at W end not of special interest.
Attached C18 bakehouse at E end linked back to stable and
principal block. Main one-and-a-half storey range now with C19
red brick facing, dentilled eave. Central segment headed door
with C20 2-leaf door, having upper leaded glazing, to E ,
segment headed window with sashes c1900, glazing bars, 4x2
panes, further to E, C20 2-light casement window and another
with single light. Upper floor lit by 3 dormer windows, 2 with
2-light casement windows with glazing bars, 2x2 panes, one
with single light casement. Principal stack emerges through
roof in front of apex, upper part rebuilt in C19. Second stack
through roof pitch towards hip at E end. W end elevation, 2
conjoined units, to S, end gable of older one and a half
storey house. To N, side wall of taller 2-storeyed addition.
N-S, C19 stack rebuilt in C20, 2 first floor sash windows, one
with moulded architrave, sashes, C20 replacements. S block.
two C20 ground floor sash windows with glazing bars, each 4x3
panes. First floor, single 2-light casement window. E
elevation of N front, projecting 2-storeyed block, ground
floor 2 C19 sash windows with moulded architraves.
INTERIOR: first floor, principal framing members of 3 celled
house c1600, with arched braces, posts, tie-beams and evidence
of side purlin roof. Ground floor, considerably altered but
central hall ceiling joists of deepish section with
carpenters' marks and diminished haunched soffit tenons,
bridging joist seated on lintel of C17 fireplace. The
originally wide fireplace is now reduced on N side and the
timber lintel is under-built c1800 with brick segment headed
arch. Backing fireplace for original parlour at W end of C20
rebuild.
BAKEHOUSE: attached, aligned N-S. Single storey red brick
colourwashed, peg-tiled roof, stack at S end gable. W
elevation, C19 boarded door and C20 2-light fixed window. E
elevation, 2 windows, now boarded in, one C19 with glazing
bars, 4x2 panes. S end elevation contains rear of stack, now
rebuilt in C20 in red brick.
INTERIOR: timber lintel of large red brick fireplace has
simple late C17 stopped chamfer. Roof framing of queen
post/side purlin type still contains 2 trusses with jointed
and pegged members and probably contemporary. Outer walls of
C18 red brick up to eave with occasional timber bearers.
Stable interior plain red brick. A deep well in the rear yard
immediately to the W of the bakehouse is now capped and has a
C20 mock well head over the top.
