8/13 Bankhead Stable and
Coach-house Building,
and Yard Wall
GV II
Detached stable and coach-house building at Bankhead (q.v.), 1864 by
Alfred Waterhouse for the Bolesworth Estate. Red brick in header bond
with roof of banded shaped tiles. L-shaped, of 1 storey with lofts in
roof; hipped gables and a hipped dormer in corner; 2 chimneys, each
with a single square flue. Weathercock at right end and clock in
right gable. Two arched carriage doorways in right wing; other
doorways have shouldered lintels - one in left wing is under an open
porch with pentice roof on shaped timber brackets. Small-pane hopper
windows of wood. Sandstone retaining wall to yard in front of
stables. The strong horizontal massing of this building happily
complements the vertical expression of the house.
