Monument to George Hawks

Dated 1865. Stone. Standing figure in mayoral robes and chain, holding a scroll
and standing on stepped base upon an inscribed shaft with deep cornice resting on
square plinth with chamfered corners. Inscriptions:

FIRST MAYOR 1801-1863. ERECTED BY HIS FRIENDS AND BY THE WORKMEN OF
GATESHEAD IRON WORKS, OF WHICH HE WAS THE SENIOR PARTNER.

Historical note. Hawks's Iron Works cast the iron, 5,050 tons of it, for
Stephenson's High Level Bridge.
