Description

TQ 2780 SW HYDE PARK, SW1

77/8 Cattle Trough (At Junction of West
Carriage Drive with Serpentine)

II

Cattle trough. Late C19. Provided by and inscribed "Metropolitan Drinking Fountain
and Cattle Trough Association." Grey granite trough supported on rectangular blocks
with waste water tray beneath. Shaped head and cistern at one end. Founded in 1859
the Metropolitan Free Drinking Fountain Association (Cattle Trough added 1867)
provided free fresh water to many humans and beasts at a time when ale and spirits
were easier to obtain than water and most supplies contaminated. Cattle driven to
metropolitan markets and, by 1885, over 50,000 working horses in London were spared
the frequent risk of death from dehydration by the provision of troughs.
