Roadside and pathside walls to churchyard, Church of St Barnabas, including north and west gateways and squeeze to north-west corner
GV
II
Boundary walls, gateways etc to churchyard. Mostly C19. Local grey lias and Ham stone, cast iron gates. Walls enclosing
west, north and east sides of churchyard, with gateways in west and north walls, and squeeze to end of church path on
north west corner. West gateway the most important: octagonal Ham stone piers, moulded stone bases, ashlar shafts and
castellated pointed tops; gates have rails with knob tops, quatrefoil ornament to middle rails and trefoil cusping
under top rail: flanking west wall of random coursed lias with stones set vertically on top, average 1.5 metres high.
On north west corner return wall of similar height to end of Church Path (attractive stone sett thoroughfare) having
two lias stone slabs as squeeze (roadside baffles) North wall averages 1 metre high, with shaped Ham stone caps,
sweep at north-west corner and to north gateway, simpler with square lias piers and Ham stone coved and hipped caps,
gates similar to western gate. Wall continued along east boundary, getting higher at south end. The whole has an
important place in the setting of the Church of St Barnabas (qv) and in the streetscape of the village, being on a
prominent corner.
