ST 76 NE ST. CATHERINE'S

5/162 Orchard Farmhouse

Farmhouse. C17, altered c.1800 and C20. Rubble with freestone dressings;
slate mansard roof to west part and double Roman tiled roof to east, both with
coped raised verges; large rubble stack on right gable end. The western range
is of a single storey and attics in C20 4-light dormers; two C20 casement windows
to right, off-centre door, and 2-light casement in ovolo moulded surrounds to
left of door. The eastern part has 2 storeys and attics and two 2-light
casement windows in ovolo moulded surrounds; the east gable end has a 16-pane
glazing bar sash window on the ground floor and a 12-pane sash above. Interior:
formerly a cross-passage plan with 2 rooms at the east; chamfered beams; the
first floor east room has a fine ashlar fireplace with an ogee-step hollow
moulded surround, elaborate stops and moulded overmantel; newel stair to upper
floor.
