Description

SP6122 LAUNTON STATION R0AD
(West side)

14/94 Grange Farmhouse

25/09/86

- II

Farmhouse. 1683 on datestone; part possibly earlier. Coursed limestone rubble
with wooden lintels; old plain-tile roof with brick stacks. L-plan with
subsidiary ranges. 2 storeys plus attics. Regular 4-window front has a 4-panel
door to left of centre and has 4-pane late C19 sashes, except to left of the
door where there is a French window. Datestone in centre of first floor is
inscribed "16/I/II/83". Roof is hipped to left and returns over the rear wing,
which has a tall stair casement plus a small leaded casement for the upper
flight, and also has a pair of renewed cross windows above 4-pane sashes. 2 roof
dormers face left. Both gables have old brick stacks. A later section, infilling
the L, has a re-used leaded cross window and links to a 2-storey range
projecting to right which may be earlier than the main house; it has an
irregular 3-window front with 2 entrances and a loft door. Interior: oak dog-leg
stair rising to attics with heavy turned balusters and knob finials.
(V.C.H.: 0xfordshire, Vol.VI, p.233. Initials on datestone probably refer to
John and Jane Jones)
