Main block is C17 refronted in brick in 1780, cornice, pediment, three
storeys, three. three-light casement windows with segmental heads, and central
door, top windows lunettes. Early timber frame west wing with re-used
material probably from an earlier house of stone on the same site. Said
to be birthplace of the Earl of Essex, favourite of Queen Elizabeth I.
