The original chapel adjoins the later church to the East along Melville
Street. The new church is of 1870/2 by R J Jones: built of stone
rubble with ashlar dressings in a curious free Gothic. The West front
is dominated by the buttressed corner tower changing by very steep slopes
into an octagon and crowned by a very steep spire. Gargoyles
project at the base of the octagon. Cramped in next to the tower a
gabled aisle bay with finial. A pointed doorway and above a two
light pointed window with quatrefoil over. The body of the church
has a gable with the South side carried lower down. A large pointed
window of four cusped lights and large cusped quatrefoil. Double
West doors not columns and moulded pointed arches. To Melville Street
in extreme perspective seven cross gables, tall paired lights with
quatrefoils to those in gables. Brick relieving arches inset between.
The old chapel circa 1840 has a two storey front to Melville Street on a
rendered plinth with parapet heavy cornice and frieze. The centre
breaks forward with a large pediment. Angle pilasters and composite
pilasters next to them. One window to centre of each floor: tall
recessed casements in architrave surrounds. Consoles supporting
frieze over first floor and sill of ground floor windows. Narrow
recessed bay adjoining new church with very tall round headed doorway
with keystone. East elevation of stone rubble, five bays, two rendered
buttresses, round headed windows in rendered rusticated surrounds,
with glazing bars, on first floor. Square headed on ground floor
with keystones.
