Farmhouse. Mid C18 for Thomas Barwis (replacing medieval hall) with early C19
alterations and additions. Painted stucco, with flush quoins and eaves cornice,
on chamfered plinth. Graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and kneelers;
painted ashlar chimney stacks. Left bay window extension of stucco over brick.
2 storeys, 5 bays, with lower 2-storey, single-bay wing to right and extended to
rear, forming overall L-shape. Panelled double door within gabled stone porch
with round arch and hoodmould, under Barwis coat-of-arms. C19 2-light casement
windows with glazing bars in painted stone surrounds, under C19 hoodmoulds on
ground-floor. 2-storey canted-bay window extension to left side, has similar
windows. Built into the side wall of the wing is a reused lintel dated and
inscribed C & M.O. 1703 or 5 (Cuthbert & Mary Osmotherley), which came from a
demolished dovecote. Internal panelled shutters to each window. Original house
was sold by Cuthbert Osmotherley to Thomas Barwis (1686-1776) in 1735, who
rebuilt the house and remarked "'that it needed three bags - first a bag of
nails; secondly a bag of gold and thirdly a bag of patience". See Transactions
Cumberland & Westmorland Antiquarian & Archaeological Society, new series, xvi,
pp.169-204.
