Terrace of 4 houses: 1792 for Lord Stamford some early-mid C19
alterations. Stuccoed with Welsh slate roof and 7 brick chimneys.
Long rectangular terrace stepping downhill. 3-storey, 13-bay front.
Houses divided by plain pilasters. Windows of lower 2-storeys, either
12, 16 or 20 pane sashes with stone sills. Top storey has 8-pane
windows with stone sills. No. 9 has 2 doorcases with plain pilasters
and heavy lintels. A 4-panelled half-glazed and a 6-panelled door.
Also semi-circular headed entrance to passage to rear. No.ll has a
similar doorcase with to right a now glazed elliptical headed coach
entrance. No.15 has a symmetrical front with a glazed fanlight above
an 8-panelled door. Interior has some original and Victorian
plasterwork, good cast iron gates and 4 and 6-panelled doors. No. 17
has a reeded doorcase with rosettes in the corner under a projecting
flat hood and containing a 6-panelled door. Simpler doorcase to
office in basement. All doorways are approached by flights of stone
steps that are included in the item.
A complex of buildings associated with fustian cutting founded by Lord
Stamford, developed by the Deardens from mid C19. No.15 was the
manager's house.
