1/250 Former Harbourmaster's House on
Old Dock at western end of
Gloucester-Sharpness Canal
II
Former Harbourmasters' House, detached. Early C19, possibly
designed by Robert Mylne, first principal engineer to the
Gloucester and Berkeley Canal Company. Rendered, bitumenised
hipped slate roof, 2 rebuilt brick stacks at rear. Square 2-storey
range, with single storey C20 addition to left not of special
interest. 3 windows, 16/12/16-pane sashes in plain reveals. Two
16-pane sashes on ground floor with central projecting portico with
2 square corner piers, 2 fluted Doric columns widely spaced, and
shallow pediment with simple moulded edge. Doorcase behind has
moulded frame and flush panel door (original panelled door may be
beneath). This house, on the westernmost end of the Old Dock
(probably designed by Thomas Telford), forms part of a series of
buildings on the Gloucester-Sharpness Canal designed with the
classical Doric portico motif.
