TQ 02 SW FITTLEWORTH STRETCH HILL

10/168 Fitzleroi Farmhouse
22.2.55

II

House. The origin of the name of this house is traditionally associated with a son
of Henry I and a Welsh princess, but the house was built by Francis Dawtrey in 1623
and has this date on it. Two storeys. Four windows. Stone rubble with red brick
dressings and quoins. Tiled roof. At the north end of the front are two gables with
ball finials. The northern one has a cartouche of the Dawtrey family (a prominent
Petworth family) on it and a ball finial at the outer angle of the gable as well as
at the apex. The other gable contains a blocked attic window. One original casement
window with stone mullion. The other windows are sash windows with glazing bars
intact. Stone doorway with depressed pointed head.
C19 parallel wing added behind.
