Early C19. Coupled lodges at the entrance to Stratfield Saye Park, taken
over as a national gift by the Duke of Wellington in 1817. 2 small 2 storeyed
units, symmetrical in form and arranged symmetrically on either side of
the entrance gate. Low-pitched hipped slate roofing, with a moulded cornice
of small modillions, continuous round the building and above and below
the pediment; small central chimney. Stucco walling; the front has a pediment
above a slightly projecting unit containing a blind arch above wide pilasters,
with an impost band (which is a 1st floor band, round each block), a central
window-opening, and plinth. On the inner (larger) sides each facade has
2 windows on 2 floors. Upper windows are 2-light casements. The ground-
floor being sashes in reveals (one a plain door). The gateway between
the lodges has 4 posts with ball finials, 2 pedestrian and double carriageway
gates, having curved upper rails.
